How to succeed with sweetener

Do you want to get started with sweeteners but aren't quite sure how? Don't worry – we’ve put together our best tips on what sweeteners actually are, how to use them, and why they can serve as an alternative to sugar.

Why use sweeteners?

Sweetener is an obvious alternative to sugar – especially if you want to avoid the sugar rush but still enjoy sweet treats like cake and desserts.

Our DAVA Sweetener can be used in a 1:1 ratio with regular sugar and is suitable for baking, desserts, and hot drinks like coffee and tea.

It is based on erythritol, which is a sweetener naturally found in fruit and fermented foods – and it contains 0 calories.

How do you use the sweetener erythritol?

Erythritol tastes like sugar, can be used like sugar, and has 60–70% of the sweetness of sugar. Even so, you can use it in the same amount – or a little more if you want a sweeter result.

And YES, we know that cake and dessert will hardly ever be "healthy," but that doesn't mean you can't choose a smarter solution. With erythritol, you avoid the rapid blood sugar spikes – and that's not bad at all.

Granulated or powdered – what should I choose?

We offer our sweetener in two varieties: Granulated and powdered. The difference lies in the texture and what they are best suited for.

Granulated

Granulated resembles regular sugar in both consistency and structure. This makes it particularly suitable for baking, hot drinks, and anything that needs to be heated.

When the sweetener is heated, it dissolves easily and provides the classic sweetness you know from, for example, white sugar.

It is therefore suitable for muffins, bread, porridge, or for sweetening your coffee or tea.

Powdered

The powdered variety is finely ground – almost like confectioner's sugar – and therefore perfect for cold recipes where you want to avoid crystals from the granulated version or a grainy consistency.

It is an obvious choice for frosting, icing, dressings, and other recipes where you do not heat the sweetener. You can also use it for, e.g., chia pudding if you think it needs a little sweetness.

The powder dissolves faster and provides a completely smooth and even mouthfeel.

Blood sugar and sweeteners - how are they connected?

It works like this: sweetener does not affect blood sugar because it is not sugar, but rather polyols (sugar alcohols).

Why is it important to keep blood sugar stable?

Blood sugar is the amount of glucose in your blood – and glucose is the body's primary energy source. This applies to your brain, your muscles, and all the body's cells. Your blood sugar is regulated by hormones like insulin and glucagon, which help the body maintain balance.

When blood sugar fluctuates significantly throughout the day, it can lead to fatigue, mood swings, and that classic “hangry” feeling. In the long run, unstable blood sugar can also make it harder to maintain weight and increase the risk of, among other things, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

We are not saying that this will happen to you, but simply that it can happen. If you are the type who is conscious of this, sweetener can be a way to avoid spikes in blood sugar.
